FAQ
-
Noise Machine is comprised of a one bedroom cabin and two separate sound studios, both with unique gear, storage, and their own comfy cozy bed.
Our studios are spaces designated and designed for capturing, shaping, and refining sound at all levels. That means you have access to two studio spaces, sound equipment, beautiful vistas and natural settings to find inspirations and capture audio/ video work; tools to help you create work that sounds the way you imagine it, sound that represents you.
In the main studio, you can write at the baby grand piano, record vocals or instruments, produce & arrange music, track demos or a full album, edit and mix audio, or experiment with new sounds and ideas.
The second studio is a smaller sound-focused studio with studio monitors, midi keyboards, Dj mixers, sound boards, mics, and, yes, another bed. This studio space is ideal for mixing, vocal recording, production, and scoring work.
It’s a place for writing sessions, rehearsals, voiceover work, podcasting, film audio, and any other project that benefits from clear, intentional sound.
You can book the space with or without an engineer, depending on whether you want hands‑on support or prefer to work independently. We also offer mentorship, production coaching, voice lessons, and private studio time, so you can learn new skills while you create. Whether you’re polishing a final mix, exploring a new idea, or simply needing a quiet, focused environment, Noise Machine gives you the tools and space to work deeply, to wonder, wander, and discover something new.

A professional studio can make a meaningful difference. Good equipment, acoustically treated rooms, and the support of encouraging and experienced engineers and producers can elevate your sound and help you get the most out of your project. Beyond the technical side, our studio also offers a focused, distraction‑free environment where you can experiment, refine ideas, and receive guidance when you want it. We also offer more structured support, work plans, and project management as forms of support in a quest to provide holistic production services through Noise Machine Studios.
That said, the real value depends on your artistic goals, workflow, and the type of project you’re creating. For artists seeking polished results, collaborative input, or access to gear they don’t have at home, a studio can be well worth the investment.
Because our studio is oceanside, sound‑proofing can be weather‑dependent. Some artists love the natural ambience, while others prefer a more controlled environment. If you need guaranteed quiet, sound proofed against weather, and full privacy, we can help arrange a private studio rental within the local community with a soundproof room.
Nature is a constant character here and part of our unique studio experience here at Noise Machine Studios.

Probably! But, we certainly have certain technical limitations in our space, can host a limited number of artists, and are located rurally in the breathtaking qathet region of BC, which requires travel.
The studio is designed to support a wide range of creative practices, and we take the time to understand your project, your goals, and what you need to feel grounded and supported. Before booking, we’ll talk through your creative vision, technical requirements, and any specific preferences to make sure the space, equipment, and team are the right fit. Whether you’re recording, producing, shooting content, resting and recharging, or exploring something more experimental, we’ll help you determine if this is the best environment for your work, and if it isn’t, we’re always happy to point you toward a space that might serve you better.
-
Absolutely — creating a space where you feel supported, respected, and genuinely comfortable is central to how we work and our top priority. We prioritize collaboration, clear communication, and a culture rooted in anti‑racism, community care, and feminist principles. Prejudice or discriminatory behaviour of any kind is not tolerated, and we reserve the right to decline interaction or services if anyone’s safety or dignity feels compromised. Our intention is for every person who enters the space to feel heard, welcomed, and safe, so your creative process can unfold with trust, ease, and real connection.
We will do our best to accommodate the needs of all who come to our space and look forward to having an indepth conversation about how we can support you and your work.
-
Absolutely. We take the necessary time to meet, discuss and fully understand your artistic direction, goals, and the emotional landscape you want your project to hold. Before any sessions begin, we’ll walk through your vision, references, and preferences to make sure we’re aligned from the start. Throughout the process, we keep communication open and encourage ongoing feedback, adjustments, and experimentation. Our priority is ensuring you feel understood, supported, and creatively at home in the space.
We also encourage folks to use the space with the engineers of their choice. We are able to simply provide space and an inspiring location if you want to bring your team!

Whether you’re here for a quick burst of productivity or a multi‑day deep dive, artists often make meaningful progress when they give themselves room to follow the natural pace of their process.
What you can accomplish at Noise Machine depends on the length and purpose of your studio session, and this varies widely from artist to artist, project to project. Some people book a few hours to track vocals, rehearse, or sketch out ideas, while others reserve full days or week‑long blocks to produce demos, record an EP, or to dive into more focused creative work.
If you’re unsure how much time your project might need, we’re always happy to talk it through and share what other artists have achieved in similar timeframes. We also offer project management as a service if that’s something you could use help with.
When it comes to residencies, it’s worth noting that the calm, nature‑immersed environment often shifts the pace of the work in a good way. Many artists find themselves more relaxed, more rested, and more open to experimentation than they expected. Often people sleep deeply and take naps. Because of this, we recommend setting flexible goals for your sessions, think in terms of minimums and maximum goals, so you can feel successful even if your project evolves differently once you’re in the space.

The property includes a one‑bedroom cabin and two studio spaces, all arranged along a pretty outdoor walkway from the parking area, down some dirt stairs, to the seaside cabin and studio location. The main cabin features a kitchen, washroom with bathtub, laundry, living room with record player and streaming‑enabled TV, and shared indoor/outdoor areas for working, relaxing or exercising.
The Noise Machine studio is a separate building connected by an outdoor hallway. It includes studio monitors, MIDI tools, a baby grand piano, electric organ, drums, bass, guitar, and various sound‑making equipment. Most artists sleep here in a cozy curtained bed nook with a double bed that can be closed off for privacy.
There is also an upper studio space in the nearby garage, where other sound work can happen when artists are in residence. This space includes an additional sleeping area, which allows us to keep the main cabin and studio free for private or group use if that’s preferred. This space can also be used for extra sleeping space when hosting larger groups or workshops.
Shared spaces include the kitchen, washroom, living room, porch, yard, and laundry. The cabin sits right on the shoreline, accessed by a set of dirt stairs, with the outdoor hallway providing natural separation and privacy between the respective spaces. Two paddleboards are available for use, and weather permitting, the porch is a great spot for stretching, reading, taking in the view, rehearsing, or simply staring into the sea.
-
The property is located in a rural, beachside setting and does require navigating uneven terrain. Access to the cabin involves a short drive from the nearest town (Powell River) followed by a set of dirt stairs (approximately 20 steps). The shoreline is rocky, and at high tide the water reaches the edge of the cabin. Inside, the main cabin is single‑level, while the Noise Machine studio includes a two‑step drop. Please note that the property and buildings are not wheelchair accessible.
Powell River, in qathet, BC is on the mainland, but can only be reached by ferry, by plane, and by float plane.
When the residency is shared, common areas function as communal spaces. We’re happy to provide free guidance on travel options, and we can also assist with your booking travel for a service fee.
-
Noise Machine is primarily designed with musicians and sound‑based artists in mind, but the space has also been a great fit for traditional artists, writers, poets, and other creative practices. The environment is quiet, rural, and flexible, and we’re always happy to adapt the space to support a range of mediums whenever possible.
If you’re unsure whether your specific medium or workflow will suit the studio, please reach out and tell us a bit about what you do. We’ll gladly talk through your needs and help determine whether the space will support your practice comfortably.
The limits that our space present we typically have community solutions to. We have access to sound proof recording space off property, most equipment, gear, and instruments, as well as community of local talented musicians and artists.

In general, we don’t host pets in the studio spaces. However, because each project is unique, we’re open to discussing exceptions on a case‑by‑case basis. There is a studio dog, Athena, who is a peaceful old bulldog who loves all other animals and tolerates humans. She is often around but certainly take a holiday if she may disrupt anything. If a pet is approved, a damage deposit will be required.
The property is unfenced, next to a road, a forest that leads into the back country, a rocky beach, and the Pacific Ocean. There are bears, cougars, racoons, eagles, and other predators which we live up close with.
We encourage residents to engage with the space in ways that allow them to be fully present and make the progress towards their goals.
-
Yes. Noise Machine is located in a quiet rural area. We will provide you with keys to the spaces. We’re also happy to make space for any materials or works in progress you’ll need to store during your stay in a secure garage space.
To help us prepare, please let us know what you anticipate bringing or storing, and we’ll ensure there’s an appropriate place for it.
Please note that Noise Machine is not responsible for any items that are left, lost, or damaged on-site.

Because our studio is oceanside, sound‑proofing can be weather‑dependent—some artists love the natural ambience, while others prefer a more controlled environment. If you need guaranteed quiet and full privacy, we can help arrange a private studio rental within the local community.
The weather reigns supreme. When it is stormy, windy, rainy, thundering and wavy it can be very loud. This can be very inspiring, stimulating, and exciting, but can generate a lot of noise as the ocean touches the house during such storms. These are infrequent and irregular, though more regular in the winter months. That said, some winter days are shrouded in thick fog and the silence is deafening.
We encourage folks to expect nature to be part of their work here and to remain flexible with the sea and weather and use the energy to contribute to their creations.
-

Yes. We regularly collaborate with local organizations, arts groups, and community partners to support exhibitions, showcases, performance series, workshops, and open‑studio style events. While these offerings aren’t guaranteed for every residency, we’re always happy to explore what might be possible during your stay.
If you’re interested in planning an event, or if presenting your work is an important part of your residency goals, please include this in your communication with us. The more we know about what you’re envisioning, the better we can help coordinate timing, partnerships, and space to support it.
-
We recommend booking 1-3 months in advance, but we are happy to book up to a year in advance with a downpayment to secure your preferred dates.

Yes! Residencies and studio rentals are available throughout the entire year. Please keep in mind that peak season runs from May to October, when availability can be more limited. We also offer discounted rates for longer stays, extended studio use, and during the slower season (November to April).
Summer is dramatically beautiful and glorious and full of life with dolphins and seals and the area is considerably more populated with many local events, many music events, and exciting places like Savary and Texada Islands.
Fall is the slow collapse of summer, beautiful colourful leaves on the maples and alders. Decay, closing, sweaters, soups, migrating animals taking their leave…..
Winter is dark and dreary and eerie and can be energetically moody with storms and a wood stove stoked to high heaven. This time of year can be very productive with long nights and at times oppressive rain. That said, the outdoors is nearly always accessible as one of the most temperate places in the country and we get to garden year-round.
Spring… spring is divine. The earth is reborn; the plants come to life; the birds return; the days get longer and it’s an exciting time in forest and on sea as migrating animals begin to return to the coast.
-
Absolutely. We’re happy to coordinate an a video walkthrough at any time.
If you are in the qathet region, we are happy to give you a quick in person tour of the space.
Let us know what works best for you, and we’ll make sure you get a clear sense of the space before you book!

Marketing, social media, and promotion of your time here or work together can be discussed beforehand.
We want people to be free of the tyranny of social media. There is NEVER an obligation to post, to record your time here, or to translate it for an audience. If what you need is freedom from these considerations, then we encourage you to disconnect.
We also recognize the very real impact and at times requirement of social media presence, content creation, documentation, capture, and sharing in creative careers. We also encourage this! Please take advantage of the beauty of the natural area, the gorgeous animals, plants, lights, clouds, trees, and studio spaces.
We love to feature the artists we work with, and we’re happy to document parts of your experience and share highlights on our social media and website. You’re also welcome to share your time at Noise Machine on your own platforms. We see this as a collaborative, mutually supportive connection.
If you’re interested in more formal or structured marketing efforts, such as coordinated campaigns or promotional materials, we can discuss those on a case‑by‑case basis to see what’s possible and what best supports your project, connecting you with some of our partners, tailoring connections to meet your goals, whatever they are.
