The Story
My sister created a documentary about our mother and I composed the soundtrack.
The colourful documentary my sister made lead to the ambient soundtrack album by the same name, Violet Gave Willingly. The samples used in this project all derived from a letter written to my mother’s abusers, which I recorded at my home studio. I then scrambled and warped the audio beyond recognition, deleted the original audio, and burned the letter.
From that palette, I built Violet.
The film and album can be watched and listened to at the bottom of this page.
That album has since evolved into a gallery installation, art therapy tool from survivors, and this remix series; designed to empower women, femmes, BIPOC, and other marginalized communities to explore electronic music creation, gain hands-on experience with production, the release process, and build a network of femme collaborators and industry professionals.
The VGW: Remixes project aims to support more women in electroacoustic, electronic, and EDM genres who are interested in remixing, curating, and releasing more music. Through literally re-voicing these experiences and transforming sound into new songs, we continue collective processing, and build community with other femmes and gender-diverse folks interested in electronic and technical music.
The first volume of this series will release early March 2026 and curated by me, Sophia Sanford.
The Purpose
The hope is that this project is repeats and evolves. Curation by other artists who want to pull in & raise up femme talent. By connecting women and gender-diverse selectors, producers and industry professionals from across our collective networks, we give each other better chances at having more women on our projects, more femme collaborators, stronger teams, and a better industry. My hope is that through this project, we are able to give each other opportunities and experiences centred in advancing our collective experience as artists and technicians through an inclusive and expansive sense of sisterhood. Opportunities to try new genres, collaborate, curate, and experience the release process supported by other femmes. Each volume will go through the entire release process, including funding applications. We aim to compensate all participants fairly, that said, we are open to exchanges for use of space at Noise Machine Studios or services and skills we offer. We also pay cash and points. These points will be negotiated before any work is undertaken.
Who Should Apply
We’d love to hear from artists, remixers, and any industry collaborators interested in being part of this project. If you want to nominate someone you feel would be a good fit please feel free to share their information on the form below and we will consider them for coming remix volumes. We encourage women, femmes, non-binary, gender-diverse, queer folk, and anyone from under-represented and under-supported communities in the arts who prioritize the advancement of all women.
Each volume will be released on Noise Machine Records and go through the entire release process, including funding applications, mastering, marketing, and publicity as budgets allow. This project is aimed at offering women opportunities to go through the release process, learn new skills, practice existing skills, increase their catalogue, and connect with other women in the EDM & production spaces. We aim to compensate all participants fairly and are applying for funding on an ongoing schedule. That said, we are open to exchanges for use of space at Noise Machine Studios, services, or skills that we offer. We also pay cash and points. These details will be negotiated before any work is undertaken.
If you are wanting to become a remixer or curator on an upcoming volume or you know someone who would be a good fit for this opportunity please reach out on the form below or contact info@noisemachine.studio directly.

The Film
Violet Gave Willingly immerses us in the colourful world of textile artist Deborah Dumka, inviting viewers to witness the unflinchingly intimate details of her artistic process and inner life. Nestled in a cluttered studio by the sea, we witness an artist at work on a project that delves into a past unspoken. An intimate study of the nature of memory and how it can both harm and protect, the film lays bare the continuum and legacy of gender-based discrimination, sexism, and sexual violence. More than a portrait, the film is a conversation. As mother and daughter struggle to give voice to their experiences, power radiates from speaking uncomfortable truths.
In 2022 Violet Gave Willingly debuted to much critical acclaimed and was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award in 2023. 2024 saw the release of Sanford’s extended soundtrack, a 45-minute ambient album. 2026 will see the release of a series of Remix Volumes, generously funded by Creative BC.
